Jennifer Rauch receives a Master of Journalism degree this year from
Temple University with a 4.0 grade
point average. The university gave Jennifer its highest award for a journalism
student, the Even-Tov Scholarship, in April 1998 and selected her article
"Atten-shun" (published by Philadelphia
City Paper on November 14, 1997) as best feature story by a student.
Jennifer taught photojournalism at Temple from 1996 to 1998 as assistant
to Dr.
Edward Trayes. She also prepared Considering
the Alternatives, a content analysis of weekly newspapers, under
the guidance of Dr.
George Gerbner.
During the past two years, Jennifer has also worked as managing editor
of the independent student newspaper Temple News; as stringer for
the Phoenixville bureau of the Pottstown Mercury; as editor and
photographer for the special-events marketing firm Sports & Entertainment
Strategies, Inc.; and as intern at the City Paper, for which she
has produced three dozen articles, several photographs, and two cover stories.
She has also produced creative work for Philadelphia's Academy of Natural
Sciences, the South Street-Head House District, Boothman Consulting Firm,
Convention Publishing, and Air Products & Chemicals.
Before pursuing her graduate degree, Jennifer wrote, edited, made photographs
and designed publications for the American
Red Cross (1995-1996) and Lehigh University
(1993-1995). Her work has also appeared in the Philadelphia
Inquirer, Morning Call, Express-Times,
Red Moon Martini, Lehigh Bulletin, Lehigh Week, Brown & White, Uptown,
Magnet, and Chicago Reader, among others.
Jennifer earned her Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Mass Communication
and French from Pennsylvania State
University in 1991. She ranked in the top 10 percent of her class and
joined the national honor societies Phi Kappa Phi and Kappa Tau Alpha.
Her advisor and mentor at Penn State was Dr. Vincent Norris. She also attended
the University
of Manchester, England, as a visiting student in international media.
Jennifer is committed to her career in print journalism and education.
Her professional, research and teaching interests include mass media and
society; the alternative press; the political economy of communications;
cultural imperialism; photojournalism; media criticism and analysis; and
writing, editing and designing for newspapers.
A native of Allentown, Pennsylvania, Jennifer has also lived in Washington,
D.C., and Marseille, France. She moves to Beijing in September 1998
to become an editor at the Engligh-language newspaper China
Daily.
